RWBY: Amity Arena Wiki

Buffs and Nerfs in RWBY: Amity Arena refer to any positive or negative changes to a unit's stats.

Overview[]

The term "buff" refers to an improvement of a card (or aspect of a card). Conversely, the term "nerf" refers to the weakening of a card (or aspect of a card). Buffs and nerfs are applied through the game's various monthly updates (although units such as Rifle Pyrrha have been updated outside of the monthly update schedule), and are intended either for game balance or to see a card's usage increased.

Although buffs or nerfs can be intentional, oftentimes buffs or nerfs can be unintentional if a card is strengthened or weakened through buffs or nerfs to other cards. For example, the addition of Boundless Jaune saw an unintentional buff to Shadow Blake, as Boundless Jaune could heal Shadow Blake's taunt-inducing clones. When Boundless Jaune's ability to heal summoned entities was removed in the September Surge Update, it also provided an unintentional nerf to Shadow Blake.

Criticisms[]

Many buffs and nerfs throughout the history of RWBY: Amity Arena have been met with criticism from the community.

For an example of a notorious buff, the White Fang Gunner Barracks were buffed in the April Fools Update to spawn two White Fang Gunners instead of just one. This buff saw the Barracks enter a large number of decks almost immediately, causing a large amount of pushback within the community. The structure received another buff in the September Update where it spawned four Gunners upon its destruction, causing even more pushback within the community after months of nerfs that did little to stop its prevalence in the meta.

For an example of a notorious nerf, Professor Port received nerfs in the Almost Anniversary Update to his bullet damage, attack speed, and re-targeting time, making him useless in the eyes of many players. Due to the severity of the nerf, it is referred to as the "Port truck" within the Amity Arena community.

Trivia[]

  • The term "nerf" is taken from the toy brand of the same name, whose toys are made out of foam and are thus considered safe with little chance of injury.
