Emotes in RWBY: Amity Arena are animated emoticons featuring various characters from the RWBY franchise. Emotes can be sent during battle to convey a variety of emotions (such as sadness or anger), to wish your opponent good luck at the start of a battle, or to taunt your opponent.
Emotes have been available in the game since launch, with emotes of Ruby Rose and Weiss Schnee being respectively given out as pre-registration rewards[1] and as gifts for new players. Custom emote decks were added in the November Update.[2] The only emote to currently feature sound, the Unholy Scream Emote, was made available in the limited-time Non-Descript Bundle in December 2019.[3] The first non-character emotes were added in A Sweet Update.[4]
There are currently 193 emotes available, divided between 15 different characters as well as various objects.

Upcoming Emotes[]
The following characters are confirmed to receive emotes in the future.
- To be added.
Controversies[]
Laughing Jaune Emote[]
The emotes featuring Jaune Arc were added in the Major Update Number Zwei.[13] Almost immediately, players began complaining about opponents doing nothing but spamming the emote featuring Jaune laughing, seen to the right. Since its release, players have asked for the ability to report opponents who do so, or the ability to permanently mute emotes, since current emote muting can only be done during battles and only lasts until the end of said battle. These have not been implemented.
The controversy was referenced in the card bio for the Atlesian Beam Turret.
Neo Emotes[]
The emotes featuring Neopolitan were added in two limited-time bundles during April 2020. Before they were added, emotes featuring Neo were a popular request. However, the bundles containing the emotes both cost $49.99, meaning players would have to spend almost $100 if they wanted all eight emotes. This was widely criticized, since many players were following stay-at-home orders during the COVID-19 pandemic and had no source of income. However, many players defended the decision, noting that the developers needed a way to make money during the pandemic. The controversy was brought to an end when the Amity Arena Twitter account revealed that the emotes would be added to the Cookie Shop in June 2020.[6][7]

Trivia[]
- The emote depicting Myrtenaster is the only emote that has been changed. It originally pointed to the left, which meant it was being held by a right hand. However, since Weiss Schnee is left-handed, the emote was mirrored.
- An image on the app's page on both Google Play and the App Store shows a screenshot of emotes being used in academy chat. However, this ability has never existed in the game, and there has been no word from any official Amity Arena social media accounts on whether or not this ability will ever be added.
- The only emotes that were available for a limited time were the Penny Polendina, Zwei, and Cinder Fall emotes.
- The Penny emotes were available during December 2018 and returned in December 2019.[14] The official Amity Arena Twitter account stated that if they were ever added to the Cookie Shop, it would be at the start of the holiday season.[6]
- The Zwei emotes were only available from June to July 2019. The official Amity Arena Twitter account stated that they were unsure if the Zwei emotes would be added to the Cookie Shop.[6]
- The Cinder emotes were only available from May to June 2020. They were initially planned to be added to the Cookie Shop,[5] but with the shutdown of the game, this is unlikely.
- The Penny emotes are the only emotes that feature holiday outfits, as the other emotes, excluding the "Wonder Zwei" emote, feature the default outfit of the featured character.
- The emotes seen in the game served as the design basis for the "RWBY Kawaii" collection in the Rooster Teeth Store.
- On February 8, 2020, the official Amity Arena Twitter account revealed that they made emotes of Penny Polendina's DJ P3N-3 outfit from the RWBY Chibi episode "Battle of the Bands", but couldn't put them in the game for technical reasons.[15]
- The Neopolitan emotes were drawn by art director Uyalago in just two days.[16]
- One of the Velvet emotes references the "Surprised Pikachu" meme.[19]
